Background Information

The Saint Germain Town Lakes Committee was created in 2004 in recognition of the invasive weed issues in Little Saint Germain Lake. Proponents of the committee believed that the challenges Little Saint Germain Lake was facing with Curly-leaf pondweed and Eurasian Watermilfoil should be of concern to all the lake organizations in the community, and to all residnets of the town as invasive weeds were likely to become established in other lakes as well.

Goals of the Lakes Committee duriing its first ten to twelve years centered around the prevention and management of aquatic invasive sprecies (AIS). The Committee was successful in obtaining many thousands of dollars in State grants to:

1. Implement innovative community education programs to raise public awareness of AIS and help slow its spread.

2. Enable individual lake organizations to contract with U.W. Oshkosh to place trained summer interns at boat landings to inspect incoming and outgoing boats and trailers for the presence of AIS and to engage boaters in conversations about preventing the spread of AIS.

3. Hire professional lake management services to conduct town-wide lake AIS and plant studies and to develop lake management plans customized to the characteristics and needs of each individual lake.

Beginning in 2016, the Lakes Committee began discussing how to expand its scope beyond AIS. While invasive species remains an important aspect of lake management, the Committee recognized there are other equally important facets to address. Of particular importance is engaging more waterfront property owners in management of the lakes within Saint Germain. To that end, the Committee launched an e-mail community outreach campaing in January of 2017.
